A hospital researcher on April 19 was sentenced to 33 months in prison for conspiring to steal trade secrets from an Ohio children’s hospital to sell in China, according to the Justice Department.
Zhou Yu, 51, pleaded guilty in December 2020 to stealing at least five trade secrets relating to exosome research from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio, where he had worked for 10 years until 2017. Exosomes are small sacs of fluid released from cells that have increasingly been used in the research, identification, and treatment of a range of diseases, including liver fibrosis and liver cancer. ....

A second former medical researcher has been sentenced to serve time in federal prison for his part in a conspiracy to steal trade secrets from an Ohio children’s hospital and sell them to China.
Yu Zhou, a former medical researcher at Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Research Institute in Columbus, Ohio, was sentenced to serve 33 months in federal prison for conspiring to steal the institute s exosome-related trade secrets concerning the research, identification and treatment of a range of pediatric medical conditions, according to the Department of Justice. Zhou, who also was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, pleaded guilty to all the charges in December, prosecutors say. ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio A former researcher at an Ohio children’s hospital has been sentenced to 33 months in prison for conspiring to steal trade secrets and sell them in China.
Yu Zhou, 51, was sentenced Monday. Federal authorities say he and his wife Li Chen, 48, who formerly lived in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, further agreed to pay $2.6 million in restitution and forfeit additional assets as a result of their convictions.
The pair conducted research in separate laboratories at Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Research Institute in Columbus, each for 10 years. ....
