Today authorities confirm two of the americans had been killed. we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. reporter: mcgee was joined by her cousin shaeed woodard and friend zindell brown and eric james williams on the days long trip to mexico. a law enforcement official familiar with the matter says it was for a cosmetic medical procedure. williams also survived but was shot in the leg. we spoke with his wife michelle today by phone. i didn t know anything until sunday morning when the fbi came. everything just seemed so surreal. reporter: she said she spoke with her husband for a few minutes today before he went into surgery. i am very happy that he s alive but i m also heartbroken for the families who can t say the same. reporter: she says the four were childhood friends taking the trip ....

Group of four friends had been childhood friends. they d known each other for a long time. according to a u.s. official, they were headed down to the border for a medical procedure. certainly now more questions raised about that fifth person and what that fifth person was, you know, doing or, you know, where that person has ended up. we also spoke overnight with a family member of eric williams, his brother robert, who has been anxiously waiting for word about his brother over the last several days. take a listen to what he had to say. i was very relieved, i felt sorry for the other family, like you said, but i was relieved to know that he was that he was okay and that i d be able to see him or talk to him again, tell him that i love him, you know. talk to him, lay hands on him a little. reporter: mexican authorities are continuing to look for the cartel government believed to be responsible for the abduction, ....

The two who survived the horrific kidnapping are in a hospital. ellison barber is in the hometown of the survivors. what more are you learning about the group of childhood friends. i understand there s a report of a fifth person who traveled with them from where you are. reporter: right, so a law enforcement official who is close to this case is telling nbc news that there was a fifth person traveling with this group, but that fifth person didn t actually cross the border into mexico because they did not have the proper documentation to cross the border with the other four. mexican authorities say once the four crossed the border, they were in mexico for about two hours when their van, the car they were traveling in came under fire. two of the four were killed. the other two, last we heard, were receiving treatment at a hospital in texas. one of the two survivors, eric williams was reportedly shot in the leg. nbc news had a phone call with his wife yesterday. ....
