The experts, including a prominent virologist, Prof Oyewale Tomori; a lecturer at the Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, Dr Oladipo Kolawole; a former first Vice President, National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria, Julian Ojebo, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in the Federal Capital Territory, , Dr Enema Amodu, also urged Nigerians to strictly observe COVID-19 protocols. ....
NCDC calls for calm as another COVID-19 variant surfaces in Nigeria Friday Olokor and Adelani Adepegba The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Monday said a new variant of COVID-19 had been detected in Nigeria and 15 other countries. The new strain, B.1.2.5 which is different from the highly infectious B.1.1.7 has, however, not been described as a variant of concern. Disclosing this at the press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the NCDC Director-General, Dr Chikwe Iheakwazu, said researchers and scientists were still working hard to understand if this variant had any effect on the virus transmissibility, immunity, as well as diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics. ....

Mr Iheakwazu while speaking at Monday’s weekly briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 said the new variant dubbed B.1.525 was first discovered in a sample collected on November 23 from a patient in Lagos State. He said the B.1.525 variant, which has spread to a few other countries, has not been classified as a variant of concern. “So far, this has been detected among cases in five states in Nigeria. B.1.525 cases have also been reported in other countries in travellers from Nigeria,” a statement by the infectious disease agency shows. He said researchers and scientists are working hard to understand if the variant has any impact on transmissibility, severity, immunity, diagnostic and already approved vaccines. ....
