Lt. Walter Correia in line to be Wareham’s next police chief Wicked Local WAREHAM – Police Lt. Walter Correia will be the town’s next police chief subject to negotiating a new contract, following a Selectmen’s vote Tuesday. Town Administrator Derek Sullivan said Correia was number two on the active Civil Service list from which current Chief John Walcek had been selected. Sullivan said Correia would make a wonderful chief, but first he needed the board’s OK to negotiate a contract with him. That request was unanimously approved. Wareham Police Chief John Walcek Retiring WAREHAM The Wareham Police Department has announced the impending retirement of Chief John Walcek. Walcek will officially retire on Saturday, April 17, ending a nearly 34-year association with the Wareham Police Department. “I consider it an honor and privilege to have been afforded the opportunity to serve Wareham and its residents for so many years,” Chief Walcek said. Get our free mobile app Walcek has served as chief since February of 2020, after becoming acting chief in 2018 following the retirement of former Chief Kevin Walsh. Walcek first began working for the Wareham Police Department in 1987, when at the age of 20 he was hired as a summer special officer. Prior to that, he had worked as a call firefighter at the West Wareham station in 1984 while still in high school. He also worked for the Municipal Maintenance Department during the summer throughout his teenage years. ....
New Bedford Man Allegedly Stole Running Car in Wareham A New Bedford man was arrested after he allegedly stole a running car from a residential driveway in Wareham. Friday at about 9:20 a.m. a resident of the Swifts Beach neighborhood called Wareham Police to say that their car disappeared while it was unlocked and warming up in their driveway. The person told Officer Malik Wilkes that they started the car, went back into the house for a few minutes, and when they came back out, the car was gone. A report was filed, and all officers were advised to be on the lookout for the vehicle. ....
