Dallas Police Department plans to roll out its first K-9 unit this spring.
Dallas Town Alderman recently agreed help to fund the new division, which will include two German Shepherds and two officers to handle them.
Total startup of the new division will be $51,000, though fundraising and collaboration with the Never Forget 9/11 Foundation, a North Carolina nonprofit, helped bring the cost to the town down to $12,000, according to Dallas Town Manager Maria Stroupe.
Officer JonMark Smith and Chief Robbie Walls have spent the last seven months assessing what the department needs for the K9 unit. In the process they raised over $30,000 to launch the new unit, according to Walls.
