An anonymous letter and videos demanding changes in policing have roiled the city of Kent in recent weeks. Police Chief Rafael Padilla has appeared before the City Council to offer explanations and apologies. He said the department is moving quickly to unveil new policies and training.
Last month Kent officials received an open letter from a group calling itself “No Secret Police.” The letter criticized the Kent Police Department’s lack of policies and training for de-escalation. It also criticized the department’s more frequent use of force in arrests of Black and Indigenous people. And it said the department helped get rid of offensive social media posts by officers last summ ....

City Hall Challenged as Virus Cases Spike


   The recent spike in COVID-19 cases is causing alarm among city officials as they hasten to manage the public crisis while illnesses among city staff cause further problems for the Fire Department.
    City Councilor Peggy Sue Martinez spoke during a Dec. 1 Public Safety Committee meeting about the current number of cases among the public in Española.
    “The concerns I have right now deal with the COVID situation, especially in the 87532 zip code which is a zip code that is the older part of Española and part of Santa Clara. You know, the numbers have gone up to close to 600,” she said. “At the beginning of October they were at 68 so it’s a pretty massive jump in 60 days, it’s just very, very concerning what’s going on with that.” ....
