Democrat Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer traveled to Florida one month ago for personal reasons, MIRS News reported Monday.
MIRS News reported:
MIRS that Whitmer’s father, Richard Whitmer, has a home in Florida.
“Her dad was fully vaccinated, and the governor is tested regularly and has never tested positive for COVID,” Brown told
MIRS, noting the governor traveled at her own expense and that utilized no state resources. …
Brown said Gov. Whitmer wasn’t on spring break but was assisting “her elderly father who is battling a chronic illness.”

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer left the state more than a month ago to visit her elderly father who suffers from a chronic illness, a spokesperson confirmed on Monday after the trip was first reported by MIRS News.
“In the past six months she has left the state three times, once for the inauguration, once to assist her elderly father who is battling a chronic illness, and once to visit with Michigan’s National Guard troops. All trips were very brief, two full days or less, closely followed public health guidelines, and were made when Michigan’s daily positivity rate was in the low single digits,” said Whitmer Communications Director Tiffany Brown. ....

Whitmer’s father, Richard Whitmer, is the retired president and chief executive officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. He owns a condominium in West Palm Beach, according to property records.
Her office has said little about the trip, except confirming that she visited her father, Richard Whitmer, a retired president of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan who owns condominium in West Palm Beach.
The trip, which was made before Whitmer was vaccinated this month, was first reported Monday by MIRS News.
The Michigan Republican Party came out against the governor almost immediately, issuing a statement on Monday night and holding a press conference on Tuesday morning. ....

The issue began last Friday when pictures appeared online of Whitmer’s Chief Operating Officer Tricia Foster on vacation in Florida. The state said she was fully vaccinated but the governor had just spoken of personal responsibility that day, even cautioning against travel to Florida a week prior.

On Wednesday, Whitmer was asked about Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Elizabeth Hertel spending spring break in Alabama without being fully vaccinated.
“There have never been travel restrictions in Michigan, there just haven’t been. What we have done is to ask people to be smart to get vaccinated to mask up,” she said. “What directors do on their personal time is their business.” ....
