NWS develops new thunderstorm warnings based on damage threat

Updated: 7:26 PM EDT August 3, 2021 CHARLOTTE, N.C. Whether run-of-the-mill afternoon storms or a squall line along a cold front, severe thunderstorm warnings can indicate life-threatening conditions. But they shouldn t be treated the same way. On Aug. 2, the National Weather Service implemented a new damage threat tag to severe thunderstorm warnings. By doing this, the NWS hopes to better convey the severity and threats to the public. This new product is called a Wireless Emergency Alert. Viewers across the Charlotte Metro area, as well as the Foothills, Piedmont, and mountains, should be aware of this change.  If you have these alerts turned on, you will begin getting them straight to your smartphone if one of these more significant storms were to breach our region.

More storms forecast Monday in Charlotte

Scattered storms possible again Monday There is a low-end risk some of the storms could be strong enough to produce damaging wind or hail from Charlotte eastward across the Carolinas. Author: James Brierton (WCNC), Brad Panovich Published: 11:21 AM EDT May 10, 2021 Updated: 8:09 PM EDT May 10, 2021 CHARLOTTE, N.C. Scattered storms returned to the Charlotte-area weather forecast Monday, according to WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich. Through the afternoon hours, the possibility of seeing scattered storms increased. Parts of Rowan and Iredell counties were under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for part of the evening, but those warnings have since expired.  We probably have a better chance of organized storms over the Triangle, Brad said in his morning weather vblog on YouTube. If we were going to see a tornado risk, it would be in that area.
