DC Police Department budget battle
The mayor and councilâs battle over the cityâs budget for police took a turn today with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser now saying if weâre not careful, we are going to break the department, talking about the stress on officers and overtime as member numbers dip lower and lower. FOX 5 s Stephanie Ramirez explains.
WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - The D.C. Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to approve what they called a compromise package, providing $5 million for the Metropolitan Police Department to hire more police officers and put $6 million toward other wrap-around service measures and violence interruption. This is instead of authorizing $11 million that Mayor Muriel Bowser had proposed to provide for 170 new officers in addition to the 135 officers she previously asked for.

the specific mention from isis today was washington. so if you re in charge of securing washington, what are your worries and what do you do? well, you know, chief lanier and the 19 government security agencies that are inside washington, d.c., i m sure they already have a game plan for stitching up the streets. however, it s not about washington. when they say that, they are talking about the capital of the great crusader enemy and what they are really saying is anyone, anyplace in america, or the west. as much as they would love to carry out an attack in washington, and that could be as simple as a one-man cell or an organized cell coming from anywhere and just shooting up a street, i think that they are more focused on the very fact that they want to spread fear throughout the united states and get the united states to act in a hasty manner in the middle east again.
chances obviously in a situation like this. that s right. you don t want the response to be underwhelming. that s exactly right. i think from the police and law enforcement command, chief lanier and the commanders of the agencies should hot-wash it get together and say, this is what happened, it s okay what are we going to do now? they don t have to be overly critical of themselves. but how are they going to do some things there are probably some things in place that we aren t seeing. but the tactical officers are very important here and the strategic response and secure that perimeter. let s go straight to the scene to tom costello who s live for us outside the navy yard. tom? reporter: i ve been doing the today show on the west coast so pardon me if i repeat something you ve heard. we know from sources there s no indication anyone was shot or that shots were fired.
