Justice Govind Mathur has retired as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
Originally from Rajasthan High Court, Justice Mathur was transferred to the Allahabad High Court in November 2017. He served as a Chief Justice of the High Court for a little over two years.
In this short span, Justice Mathur made his mark as a fearless defender of personal liberty and human rights. In his farewell speech delivered yesterday in a virtual function, Chief Justice Mathur said that he was inspired by the ideals of Dr BR Ambedkar, with whom he incidentally shares his birthday.

Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Govind Mathur, who is retiring today, said in his farewell speech that a strong judiciary is needed to keep the society civilized. Friends, to have a more civilized India, it is our responsibility to strengthen judiciary , Chief Justice Mathur said during a virtual farewell function organized by the Allahabad High Court. We are a part of a reputed and respected institution. Millions of Indians are having deep faith in us. It is only the judiciary that can firmly stand for constitutional morality. It is the judiciary which protects the constitutional values. It can be most effective tool to make India the best place for every living being, being the carrier of justice , he said.
