A barrister has been ordered to cover 40% of the damages awarded against a law firm after a former client brought action for negligence, even though proceedings against him were dropped.
Former London firm Merriman White and barrister David Mayall - who was instructed by Merriman White - were pursued for negligence after acting on a commercial claim which failed at a preliminary stage. The firm subsequently agreed to make a payment to the former client in bona fide settlement of the negligence claim.
After pleadings had closed in the negligence claim, the client agreed to no longer pursue Mayall on the basis that each side pay their own costs. Mayall denied being negligent. ....

Tax abuse lands two company directors with bans
London restaurateur and Welsh concrete pump boss have been disqualified after abusing the tax regime.

Ismael Majed Siza (60), a restaurant owner from Westminster, London, has been banned for 12 years and Keith Morgan Thomas (81), a concrete services company from Llanelli, Wales, has been disqualified for 6 years.
Both are now banned from acting as directors or directly or indirectly becoming involved, without the permission of the court, in the promotion, formation or management of a company.
Ismael Siza was appointed director of Palms Palace Limited in April 2012 and became the sole director from December 2014. The company traded as Palms Palace Café Restaurant on Edgware Road in London. ....
