SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Sarasota City Manager Marlon Brown is making an announcement regarding the appointment of a police chief at 11 a.m. Friday.
Chief of Police Bernadette DiPino submitted her resignation earlier this week. That will be in effect beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.
DiPino’s resignation came after a complaint was filed with the City of Sarasota over comments she made about a homeless man.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Bernadette DiPino has resigned as chief of police for the Sarasota Police Department, effective 5 p.m. Friday.
The announcement came after a complaint was filed with the City of Sarasota over comments Chief Bernadette DiPino made about a homeless man.
The City released information on the anonymous complaint, saying that Chief DiPino made the comments at a public event where a known individual with documented mental illnesses began mocking the officers and singers at the event.
The Sarasota Police Department whistleblower who made an anonymous complaint against Chief Bernadette DiPino warned city officials that if an officer or detective – and not the chief – had said they wanted to use a Taser on a mentally ill homeless man for creating a minor ruckus, “the comment would be met with a harsh punishment.”
“She has disciplined officers for verbal discourtesy for far more minor offensive or insensitive remarks to citizens,” the anonymous officer said in an email. “Very inappropriate for a leader to make light of such an individual publicly in front of officers, no less joke about a use of force against them for no reason.”

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - A complaint has been made to the City of Sarasota regarding alleged comments made by Chief Bernadette DiPino about a homeless man at an event.
Sarasota Police spokeswoman Genevieve Judge acknowledged that Chief DiPino was aware of the complaint but directed further questions to the Sarasota Interim City Manager.
“Chief DiPino was made aware of the complaint last Monday. Interim City Manager Marlon Brown counseled her in reference to the complaint.,” Judge told ABC7.
