MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: July 15, 2021 Position 1 candidates take the stage for Wednesday’s debate. With the Aug. 3 primary election less than three weeks away, candidates for Edmonds City Council positions 1 and 2 faced off against each other for the first time Wednesday evening at a debate organized by My Edmonds News. Positions 1 and 2 both have three or more candidates on the primary ballot (Position 1: Alicia Crank, Kristiana Johnson and Brian Hartman; Position 2: Janelle Cass, Will Chen, Luke Distelhorst and Lora Petso). The top two vote-getters will advance to the Nov. 2 general election. This story will focus on the candidates vying for Position 1. Candidate Brian Hartman did not respond to invitations to participate, leaving Wednesday’s debate as a two-person standoff between incumbent Johnson and challenger Crank. All three names will, however, appear on the Aug. 3 primary ballot. ....
MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: December 16, 2020 Editor: Selecting a police chief is one of the most important appointments city leadership will make. In many cases police will be the first and only contact most citizens have with a representative of the city. These contacts will be both positive and negative and will reflect directly on the image of the city. Credible, professional and effective forward- looking police leadership of these officers is critical. The mayor and council executed a selection process that was unprofessional. It appears there was an intentional deception concerning the qualifications of the nominee. When questioned by responsible members of the council, the mayor and human resources director responded angrily, and defensively. Then four council members bulldozed the vote. ....

The Edmonds City Council’s 4-3 decision Dec. 8 to confirm Mayor Mike Nelson’s appointment of Sherman Pruitt as the city’s next police chief. Two of the four Black in Edmonds panelists appearing Saturday via Facebook Live Alicia Crank and Richard Taylor Jr. sat on the community panel that Mayor Nelson appointed to interview both police chief candidates. Both stressed that contrary to the belief of some the panel did not make a recommendation for a preferred candidate between Pruitt, now Sauk-Suiattle Tribal Police Chief, and Edmonds’ Acting Police Chief Jim Lawless. ....
