Officials at the Chevron Refinery said early Thursday evening that flaring has stopped at the facility after it was first reported at 6 p.m. that heavy flaring was present onsite. Heavy smoke had risen into the atmosphere in the immediate vicinity, but the Contra Costa County Health Department conducted monitoring and it was revealed that there were no detectable levels offsite. The command said in an update Wednesday afternoon that efforts were still underway to determine the composition and official amount of product that was discharged. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District said Tuesday it was roughly 600 gallons (2,271 liters) of a petroleum and water mixture. A helicopter overflight found a sheen stretching from Point Molate to Brooks Island, with the impact centered on Keller Beach. The unified command statement said booms were deployed to contain or deflect the spill and additional booms were being placed preventatively at sensitive areas but there were no reported impacts at those sites. (KGO) Chevron is now saying the material that leaked from one of its pipelines into San Francisco Bay Tuesday was some combination of water and petroleum material, perhaps gasoline or diesel fuel. However, it s awaiting lab results. Initial estimates had the spill at about 600 gallons, but a Chevron spokesperson said that is likely to change. So far, according to Contra Costa County Public Health and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, there have been no reports of health or environmental impacts. We don t know exactly what it is yet, said Linsi Crain, Manager of Corporate Affairs for the Richmond Refinery. That is a pipeline that takes water products like gasoline and diesel and also oil to and from ships, so we are putting that through a lab. ....
