It was a crisp autumn morning and classical music was floating through solicitor John Gerathy’s multimillion-dollar waterfront apartment in Woolloomooloo.

Mr Gerathy was a friend and business partner of the now-disgraced mining minister Ian Macdonald. It was March 2013 and he had just checked himself out of a mental health facility where he had remained during the course of the sensational corruption inquiry into how Eddie and Moses Obeid became multimillionaires due to their now infamous Mount Penny coal deal.
At the time, the Independent Commission Against Corruption was wrapping up but Mr Gerathy maintained he was still too ill to give evidence. If he had, he might have provided the answer to the enduring mystery: given the Obeids were to receive $60 million from Macdonald’s rigged coal deal, what was in it for the unscrupulous minister? ....

Former NSW Labor ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald found guilty of corruption charges

Justice Elizabeth Fullerton, who presided over the case without a jury, heard from 38 witnesses in the year-long trial.
Fullerton found that a conspiracy to ensure a mining licence was granted over Obeid’s property was proved beyond reasonable doubt.
She found there was evidence that Moses Obeid had formed an agreement some time before May 2008 with Macdonald, and that Macdonald had then proceeded as minister for mineral resources to take steps to ensure that a mining exploration licence was granted covering Cherrydale Park.
In what is likely to become the leading case on criminal conspiracy in NSW, Fullerton found that the conspiracy was proved because Macdonald had agreed “to do what he could in connection with the granting of a licence at Mt Penny and to further the economic interests of the Obeids”. ....

Eddie Obeid found guilty, set to return to prison over role in exploration licence rigged tender

The nation’s most notoriously corrupt politician, former Labor minister Eddie Obeid, is set to return to prison after a judge found him guilty over his role in a rigged tender for an exploration licence which delivered a $30 million windfall to his family.
A guilty verdict was also delivered against former resources minister Ian Macdonald,72, and Obeid’s middle son Moses, 52.

Justice Elizabeth Fullerton, who heard the case without a jury, has said she was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that the three had conspired with the effect Macdonald “wilfully breached” his duties as a minister of the Crown in order to provide a financial advantage to the Obeid family. ....
