reporter: it was a recognition five decades in the making. the military s highest honor bestowed on four vietnam veterans for their acts of incredible heroism. they stood in the way of danger, risked everything, literally everything, to defend our nation and our values. reporter: when specialist five dwight birdwell s unit came under fierce attack, he manned a tank machine gun until his helmet was shot off his head. he ran through heavy gunfire to gather weapons and ammunition to stop the attack. wounded, birdwell tended to the injured before seeking help himself. he is the first native american to ever receive the medal of honor from vietnam. through this award i bring respect and dignity to the cherokee people. and i m very proud of being cherokee. i hope the cherokees are proud of me. reporter: pinned down by gunfire, staff sergeant edward jumped into an enemy trench alone. he was later killed in action. ....
