April marked the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster a solemn, terrifying occasion made even more severe by its overlap with another deadly, global microscopic crisis. And while tourists and researchers are now permitted to visit the 1000-square mile Exclusion Zone (including the nuclear plant’s actual control room) on certain conditions, many still stigmatize the area, with unfortunately economic reverberations echoing throughout the region.

Last week, the first, 1500 bottle batch of ATOMIK a vodka made with apples farmed from within the nearby, still inhabited Narodychi District was seized by “Kyiv City Prosecutors following a Ukrainian Security Services investigation,” according to a press release from The Chernobyl Spirit Company. And while one could easily think this was due to the whole “apples farmed within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone” thing, co-founder Professor Jim Smith says the confis ....

First Batch Of Chernobyl-Made Vodka Mysteriously Seized By Ukrainian Secret Service

The first batch of ATOMIK Chernobyl Spirits – an artisan spirit drink made using ingredients from inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone – has hit a rocky start after it was mysteriously seized by the Ukrainian Secret Services.
The Chernobyl Spirit Company announced last week that 1,500 bottles of their ATOMIK alcoholic spirit were confiscated on March 19, following an investigation by the SBU, the Security Service of Ukraine, while en route to the UK.
The company was set up by Professor Jim Smith, a prominent environmental scientist from the UK who has studied the Chernobyl accident since 1990, and Ukrainian colleagues. Their primary product is a spirit made with help of the Palinochka Distillery in Ukraine, made from apples grown in the Narodichi District – one of the still inhabited areas most affected by the infamous Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986. ....

Alcohol made near Chernobyl power plant taken by Ukrainian authorities

Elina Smirnova, the lawyer representing The Chernobyl Spirit Company, said the seizure was in violation of Ukrainian laws.
“They have targeted a foreign company which has tried to establish an ethical white  business to first of all help Ukraine. The actions of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are damaging the reputation of Ukraine as an open country for doing business. We still believe that the truth will win, Smirnova said.
Smith has studied the nuclear accident for over 30 years, and his company claims they use distillation to reduce radioactivity in the grain, which shows much of the land in the exclusion zone can,  now be used to produce crops which are safe to eat. He told BBC in August 2019 studies showed the rye was below the limit of radioactive detection. ....

This bottle of Atomik vodka was made using grain and water from the area around Chernobyl.
Ukrainian authorities have seized the very first shipment of alcohol distilled in the shadow of the Chernobyl nuclear plant, in a move that has left the spirit-makers scrambling to deal with the fallout.
The alcohol was made from apples grown outside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, but it s supposedly been scrubbed of harmful radioactive materials. It s also probably a tasty drink, if it s anything like the Atomik vodka that the same company produced back in 2019. ....

Would you drink an “artisanal spirit” made from apples grown near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant? A group of researchers from the United Kingdom has just finished producing the first 1,500 bottles. They assure us the drink is completely safe and radiation-free and hope to get it soon on the UK market.
But there’s a problem. The Ukrainian government just seized it all.

The bottles are now in the hands of prosecutors who are investigating the case. The researchers argue they are wrongly accused of using forged Ukrainian excise stamps. ....
