The Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize, instituted by the New India Foundation (NIF) in 2018, for the best book-length work of non-fiction about India announced its longlist of 12 titles for the 2020 prize. The announcement was made online on Wednesday by writer and historian Ramachandra Guha, one of the members of the jury. A shortlist of 6 will be announced on 16 November.
From a biography of V.D. Sarvarkar to an investigative book on the pharma industry, the books cover a wide and eclectic ground. Written by scholars, journalists and activists, the titles were picked by the jury, consisting of Niraja Jayal Gopal, Ramachandra Guha, Srinath Raghavan, Nayanjot Lahiri, Nandan Nilekani and Manish Sabharwal. ....

Who is an Indian? That question, which was at the heart of the anti-CAA protests, also animates a crop of recently published biographies. Threaded through these life stories are debates about who counts and who does not and if the idea of India is inclusionary or exclusionary.
It is appropriate to start with the Mughals. Ira Mukhoty’s Akbar provides a wide-ranging account of an emperor who was likely illiterate and dyslexic. Nevertheless, Akbar was shrewd enough to accommodate India’s diversity through the idea of sulh-i kul (universal peace). Supriya Gandhi’s The Emperor Who Never Was responds to that fiercely debated hypothetical: what if a supposedly-tolerant Dara Shukoh had become padshah instead of Aurangzeb? Gandhi rubbishes hackneyed portrayals of the prince as a liberal who could have averted communal bloodshed of the modern era. ....

Political Science Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara Amit Ahuja, was awarded the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay NIF Book Prize 2020 for his book on Dalit representation in India, ‘Mobilizing the Marginalized: Ethnic Parties Without Ethnic Movements’, New India Foundation (NIF) announced on Dec. 10.
The jury of the award for this year announced two winners. Jairam Ramesh, Member of Parliament representing Karnataka state is the co-winner for his book, ‘A Chequered Brilliance: The Many Lives of V.K. Krishna Menon’. ....
