Fourteen Pacific Island nations make major strides towards a Cleaner Pacific

Pacific countries made major strides towards realising the vision of the Cleaner Pacific 2025 today, with the launch of ISLANDS Pacific – a 14-nation initiative aiming to avoid the release of 28,000 tonnes of marine litter, safely dispose of 720 tonnes of contaminated material, and reduce the burden of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury in island communities.

ISLANDS Pacific will strengthen existing regional efforts to #BeatPollution, through support for container deposit legislation and improved recycling efforts, as well as building capacity for lifecycle management of key waste streams, including end-of-life vehicles, used hydraulic oil and e-waste – with special attention placed on providing opportunities for women in recycling operations.

“ISLANDS Pacific provides an incredible opportunity for Samoa,” Hon. Toeolesulusulu Cedric Schuster Samoa’s Minister of Tourism and Natural Resources and Environment said.

UNEP and Google partner to hunt for plastic pollution with machine learning

UNEP and Google partner to hunt for plastic pollution with machine learning
Bangkok, 20 April 2021 – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) today announced that it is working to fight plastic pollution using citizen science and machine learning, with technical advisory support from Google . With Google’s support, UNEP will create a new machine learning model that reveals a more detailed and accurate view of plastic pollution in the Mekong River.
One of the main challenges of fighting plastic pollution is determining how exactly it enters – or “leaks” – into bodies of water. Working in the Mekong region from 2019-2020, UNEP’s CounterMEASURE project, with the support of the Geoinformatics Center (GIC) at the Asian Institute of Technology, developed techniques of assessing plastic leakage into the Mekong River using geospatial data and images of plastic waste supplied by researchers and volunteers.  ....

Meet seven women saving the planet
UNEP / 05 Mar 2021
Women are playing a lead role in tackling some of the planet’s biggest environmental threats, from climate change to species loss, to pollution. International Women’s Day, which falls on 8 March, provides an opportunity to reflect on women’s contributions as caretakers of people and nature, defending environmental and human rights and representing the interests of those whose voices may otherwise go unheard.
Meet seven extraordinary women who are using their powers to save the planet.

Mayors, Scientists and Communities along the Mississippi River come together to tackle plastic pollution

Mayors, Scientists and Communities along the Mississippi River come together to tackle plastic pollution
Initiative was launched today at the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative’s ninth annual Capitol Meeting, where mayors representing over 100 communities along the river corridor are convening to address critical issues that impact the nation’s most important waterway, including plastic pollution.
Marine debris that continuously enters the Mississippi River poses a large threat to environmental quality and ecosystem health. As the drainage system for 40% of the continental United States, plastic waste and other litter travels through storm drains and smaller waterways into the river and its tributaries, ultimately making way to the Gulf of Mexico and into the ocean. ....
