Amelia Earhart — A Memorable Visit To Chautauqua | News, Sports, Jobs

Apr 24, 2021 Did you know that in July 1929 famed aviator and author Amelia Earhart paid a visit to Chautauqua Institution? Fittingly, she arrived from New York City by plane, piloting her Lockwood Vega plane to its landing on the 14th fairway of the Chautauqua Golf Course. Ms. Earhart was renowned for her many accomplishments, notably becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. Later, in 1935, she became a visiting faculty member at Purdue University in its Aeronautical Engineering Department. In 1937, Purdue funded her effort to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe on a flight that included her navigator Fred Noonan. The flight was to begin and end in Oakland, Calif. However, they disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean on one of the last legs of their journey and were last seen in Lae, New Guinea on July, 2, 1937. Jack R. Engdahl Jack R. Engdahl, 80, of Ashmar Lane, Jamestown, N.Y., passed away at 4:11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong area resident, he was born May 30, 1940, in Jamestown, N.Y,, a son of the late Robert O. and Genevieve Parker Engdahl. Jack was a 1958 graduate of Mayville Central School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Brockport State University in 1962 and his Master of Science in education from Fredonia State in 1968. He furthered his education by receiving his school administrator and supervisor certificate in 1979 and his school district administrator certification in 1980 from Fredonia State University.

Stuart E. “Stu” Northrop Stuart E. “Stu” Northrop, 96, of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Springdale Avenue, Jamestown, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2020 in Florida. A native of Jamestown, he was born June 3, 1924, the son of the late Clarence “Rusty” and Audrey Curtis Northrop. He was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School. Stuart was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist’s mate second class and as a nose gunner until the end of the war and honorable discharged in 1946. Prior to his retirement in 2001, he and his wife owned and operated the Christian Book Cellar for 17 years. He had also worked at Stateside Motors for 26 years as sales manager.
