PORTLAND Students in kindergarten through sixth grade will return to schools in person beginning Jan.19, officials said.
Middle and high school students will operate under a hybrid model beginning Jan. 19, alternating between in-person and remote learning, and will transition to full in-school learning Feb. 1, the Board of Education decided during a special meeting Thursday evening.
The board acted on a revised recommendation from Superintendent of Schools Charles E. Britton and after speaking with Russell Melmed, health director of the Chatham Health District.

PORTLAND - Faced with opposition from the teachers’ union and concerns about the rate of COVID-19 infections in town, the Board of Education rejected a recommendation from Superintendent of Schools Charles E. Britton to return to in-school learning next week.
Meeting virtually, the board voted 5-2 against Britton’s recommendation, which was made during the board’s first regular meeting of the New Year.
Britton had recommended that students in kindergarten through sixth grade return to school on Monday. ....
