After he pleaded guilty last week to federal charges of evading $82,000 in taxes, Chaim Deutsch said he had no intention of stepping down from his seat on New York’s City Council.
On Tuesday, he was forced to change his plans.
Corey Johnson, the Council speaker, said that after initially believing that Mr. Deutsch, a Brooklyn Democrat, could not be expelled automatically, the Council had decided after a review in consultation with city lawyers that the law mandated that he be ousted immediately. ....

Hours after getting expelled from the New York City Council for pleading guilty to tax evasion, Council Member Chaim Deutsch said he was weighing legal action in response to Council Speaker Corey Johnson’s “sudden decision” to expel him from office.
“Councilman Deutsch is evaluating all of his legal rights and options in the face of this sudden decision by the Speaker,” said Henry E. Mazurek, an attorney for the lawmaker who s represented Southern Brooklyn since 2014. ....

Larsen, the Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field Office of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation ( IRS-CI ), and Margaret Garnett, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation ( DOI ), announced that Chaim Deutsch, a New York City council member, was charged and pled guilty today in Manhattan federal court to filing a false tax return in connection with outside income he received from his real estate management corporation. Deutsch pled guilty before United States Magistrate Judge James L. Cott.
U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said: New York City Council Member Chaim Deutsch admitted today that he defrauded the IRS in connection with his real estate business. As an elected official and community leader, Deutsch had a particular responsibility to follow the law.
