Jacksonville man sentenced on drug, felon charges


A 2016 drug arrest was the most recent conviction for a Jacksonville man on April 15, but his sentencing on Wednesday landed him behind bars for possibly 20 years because of his habitual felon status, according to court officials.
Samuel Boswell, 46, of 467 White Oak Lane in Jacksonville, was convicted by a jury in Onslow County Superior Court for selling cocaine, delivering cocaine, manufacturing cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, and two counts of possession of cocaine with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine.
Afterwards, a separate hearing found Boswell a habitual felon. Judge Charles H. Henry sentenced Boswell to a total of 190-253 months (16-21 years) in jail between the drug and felon sentences, both to run consecutively in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.  ....

Onslow: Defendant pleads guilty after drug deal gone wrong led to murder


Just a few days before the trial was scheduled to begin, a defendant from Indiana made a shocking announcement and decided to take a guilty plea. 
On Friday afternoon, Jamie Weaks, now 24, pled guilty in Onslow County Superior Court to 2nd degree murder in the shooting death of 41-year-old Felicia Parker at the Budget Inn on July 31, 2018. Weaks is sentenced to 264 months to 329 months (22-27 years) in the NC Department of Adult Corrections. 
The trial was scheduled to begin Monday, March 8. 
In an email to The Daily News from DA Ernie Lee, Weaks went to the hotel room looking for Enoch Parker, who had cheated Weak s sister in a drug deal earlier in the day. Felicia Parker was the sole occupant at the time of the shooting when Weaks cames to the hotel and knocked on the door. When (Felicia) Parker didn t open the door, Weaks fired a 9 mm handgun three times into the room.  ....

Onslow County District Court closed rising coronavirus cases


Due to the rising cases of COVID-19, the Onslow County District Court will remain closed until the end of January. 
Chief District Court judge Sarah C. Seaton made the announced effective on January 12 for Duplin, Sampson and Jones County District Courts as well. 
Seaton s administrative order coincides with that of Governor Roy Cooper and Former Chief Justice Cheri Beasley. Cooper extended North Carolina s stay at home order on Jan. 6 while Beasley released an emergency directive on Dec. 14 where all non-essential in person court proceedings were postponed. 
All district courts in those counties are scheduled to remain closed through Jan. 29. 
All four counties have shown increased positive coronavirus cases and increased fatalities during the month of January. With the backlog of court cases from full closure of the courthouses during the pandemic, the heavy dockets require a large number of people inside the court rooms working closely together.  ....
