NEWARK In mid-July of 1878, the committee appointed by the “Soldiers and Sailors Society of Licking County” were making their last preparations for the reunion.
The city of Newark was also busy preparing for the arrival of President Rutherford B. Hayes, General William Tecumseh Sherman, and other dignitaries. The City council had given $200.00 to the society for decorations to use as they saw fit.
The order of events for July 22, called for the assembling of veterans in downtown Newark. From there a procession of veterans, dignitaries, bands, and citizens would travel down West Main St. to the “Great Eagle Mounds.” ....

Newark veterans invite Grant, Sherman and Hayes to Civil Warn reunion

NEWARK - In the spring of 1878, the “Soldiers and Sailors Society of Licking County” was busy planning for the reunion of the soldiers and sailors of Ohio on July 22, 1878.
The date had a special significance to the Ohio troops that fought in the Western Theater of the Civil War. It would be the 14th anniversary of the death of the beloved General James McPherson, who was killed at the Battle of Atlanta.
The reunion was advertised in newspapers across the state and personal invitations were sent out to a virtual who’s who of government officials and former commanders of the army inviting them to come and say a few words. Major Charles Dana Miller, as secretary of the society, wrote some of the letters. An invitation was mailed to former Lieutenant General and former President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant. Miller wrote to Grant, who was touring Europe, on April 12, 1878. ....

In the book Marching Home, Union Veterans and Their Unending Civil War, by Brian Matthew Jordan, the author researched what happened to the Union soldier after the Civil War.
Veterans were looked upon as fanning the flames of war with their memories. Soldiers who had spent time in rebel prisons were accused of lying about how bad the conditions were in order to sow discord against the south. When soldiers related their stories of battle, they were accused of waving the bloody shirt, wanting vengeance for those that died in battle. The widespread consensus was the war was over; stop talking about it. However, veterans could not forget what they had experienced, and they did not feel that the public should forget the dead or the sacrifices of the veteran that was made to unite the country and end slavery. ....
