Nigerian Court Grants Bail To Enugu Activist, Charles Arukwe, Remanded For Exposing Police Extortion

Awgu Chief Magistrate Court of Enugu State Magisterial District has granted bail to the detained activist, Charles Arukwe, who was remanded in prison custody for alleged forgery after exposing police extortion.   Arukwe, who spoke to SaharaReporters on Friday morning, confirmed that he was granted bail on March 26. He added that his bail conditions were perfected on March 27 and he was released from prison on March 28.

          The Awgu Division High Court of Enugu State has fixed Tuesday, March 26 to hear the bail application of detained activist, Charles Arukwe, who was remanded in prison custody on trumped up charge of alleged forgery after exposing police extortion.     One of his legal representatives, Mrs Lilian Arukwe told SaharaReporters that they filed Charles' bail application at the High Court.

Justice Ngozi Orji of the Enugu State High Court has fixed Tuesday, December 12, to rule on the bail application of Ikechukwu Uduji and his boss, Ikechukwu Okolie, who were remanded in prison custody for petitioning against the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Awgu Police Division, CSP Benjamin Ugwui for extortion and demanding for refund.

  Policemen working with the Divisional Police Officer, Awgu Police Division, CSP Benjamin Ugwui, have reportedly brutalised and broken the hand of Ikechukwu Uduji, a man who was arraigned with his boss, Ikechukwu Okolie, on a trumped-up charge of attempted murder. Pictures of the police attack on both Uduji and Okolie which SaharaReporters obtained on Wednesday, showed the broken left hand of Uduji at the prison custody in Enugu State.

One Mr Ikechukwu Okolie, who accused Awgu Divisional Police Officer CSP Benjamin Ugwui and one SP Kelvin Ugwu of illegally detaining and extorting him of N91,000 had been arrested and charged with attempted murder by the same officers and remanded in prison. SaharaReporters had reported that Okolie accused the Enugu Police Divisional Officer of extorting him for daring to seek justice against an operator of a Point of Sale (POS) machine whom his station failed to investigate over alleged N300,000 theft.
