Freeport s Winneshiek Playhouse faces uncertainty with COVID pandemic

Jane Lethlean Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT It has not been easy lately for Winneshiek Playhouse. The last production of “Witness for the Prosecution” was performed a week before the 2020 pandemic shutdown. While the theater remained empty for almost a year, Stacey Sammul, president of the board, said she remains cautiously optimistic for 2021 but isn’t ready to tackle the uncertainty for 2021. “We will be following what is being done on a broad spectrum before we make a definite plan for reopening, she said. The safety of our patrons, actors and volunteers is our first concern.” Sammul estimates the theater lost nearly $10,000 in ticket sales, along with funding received from memberships, ad sales and donations from the community. The board also approved adding improved air circulation in the theatre and stage by having the air ducts professionally cleaned. The board has discussed protocols for when to reopen, with a stringent set of procedures.
