An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging drivers to put their mobile phones away when driving as new research from the RSA shows that 1 in 10 motorists admit to regularly texting while driving.
The Driver Attitudes & Behaviour Survey 2020 also revealed that 9% of motorists admit to driving and talking on a handheld mobile phone and 9% of motorists regularly check mobile apps while behind the wheel.
International research has found that you are four times more likely to crash if using a handheld phone while driving. Texting, using social media, or messaging increases the risk substantially. In fact, drivers spend up to 400% more time with their eyes off the road when text messaging than when not texting messaging. ....

COURT prosecutions have been initiated against three young men who are accused of not-wearing face masks in retail settings in Limerick late last  year.
The three defendants were summonsed to appear before Limerick District Court after they failed to pay Fixed Charge Notices which were issued under the temporary public health regulations.
Myles Casey, aged 27, of Clonlong, Southill is accused of breaching the regulations at Spar, Roxboro Road on December 8, 2020; John Luke Ryan, aged 18, of Cluain Dubh, Fr Russell Road, Dooradoyle is before the court in relation to an incident at the Crescent Shopping Centre on December 10, last while James Michael Casey, aged 18, of Toppins Field, Rathbane is also accused of breaching the regulations at the Crescent Shopping Centre on the same date. ....

Appeal To Stay Within 5km Limit After 100 People Fined At Wicklow Mountains

A local councillor has appealed to people to stay within their own five kilometre area limit and not to visit the Wicklow Mountains.
More than 100 people were handed on-the-spot fines for breaking lockdown travel rules in Co Wicklow yesterday.
The figures, which are close to triple the number of fines issued nationwide up to Thursday, are in addition to cautions issued to over 200 other drivers who agreed to turn back and go home.
Gardaí received new powers last Monday to issue an on-the-spot fine of €100 to anyone found breaking the travel restrictions under the Public Health Act. ....
