joining us now, nbc news chief political analyst, chuck todd, the man behind the article and nbc news correspondent, vaughn hillyard. chuck, when you go back and look at 2020, and why donald trump lost, is there a definitive answer for why he lost? i think if you surveyed political strategists and political scientists, you wouldn t get a definitive answer. i think he lost simply because of covid. there s a lot of people because of what happened after the election with january 6th, they think about his antics, the first impeachment. then we had the second impeachment that sort of took place right after the inauguration. we never really had that sort of consensus, you didn t have the after action reports because you have one party was in denial that they actually lost, so they didn t do an after action report. but in some ways, neither did the democrats and i think that what i feel like i m watching is what the biden campaign thought their theory of the case was in octo ....
It didn t work then, but, you know, i have talked to democrats this year who say this is different. we ve had three years of trump in the white house. it s no longer a hypothetical issue. they ve seen him on the job they want to get him out. so that biden ad is very reminiscent of hillary clinton s 2016 message. it s all about his erraticness, his bullying. she used those exact same words in 2016. maybe it works now, but in a way it didn t work then. bill kristol, you thought character was going to count in the republican primary in 2016. you thought character might count in the general election, and i think people had a problem with the character of both candidates and so everything was relative there. a character election or not? i think it s a trump election. i think democrats think, let s talk about trump for a minute, but then we re going to pivot to our wonderful new ideas about very complicated this much expansion of medicaid but not too much expansion. i mean, that s fine, ....
Like a great new deal or the wealth tax or putting 40% of the corporate board. i think it is smart for her, too, when you are electing party and rejecting the incumbent, to be the policy nerd export in contrast of donald trump, not a bad position is she right though they re going to have four years of donald trump who did not get any policy who proposed tax plans that were not popular. a complete opposite of trump that s the case it is going to be a character election which is what kamala harris is betting. howard schultz, billionaire, former starbucks ceo mike bloomberg is already telling him hey don t do this. i have checked out the independent field that does not ....
They say they don t like it. kennedy: i will answer. paul ryan, whom i don t necessarily agree with, he is the one single book that we have to talk about the economy. this is something that resonates with those critical independent and suburban voters. republicans have not done a great job messaging the economy. it s a great thing to cut taxes and give economic harris: what is the irony of paul ryan, then, looking to the president and saying you need to talk about the economy more? i made the point, why don t they drive down there only in? they could talk about the economy, too. they don t need the president s permission to do that. kennedy: he s campaigning for the winter. he sees the senate as being more fruitful in the win column then the house, and he s good to put that on paul ryan. harris: that s where he s been, in the battleground states. this five this could be a character election and not an economic one. we will see that. harris: oh, good lord. you made chris ....
But going back to a point that doug made, she decided early on to make this a character campaign. that is all of her tv ads were challenging donald trump s character, saying he didn t have the integrity to be president of the united states. apparently, she didn t have people around her that pointed out she had character problems of he s. and when you of herself. and when you make this a character election and you have big character problems especially in the final two weeks of the election, that is going to be a problem for the campaign. i think they made a strategic mistake early on in making it a character election instead of an ideological election, and that s ultimately why she lost those key states that have gone democrat in recent elections. gregg: doug, liberal filmmaker michael moore told electors to dump trump, now he s add advocag let s disrupt the inauguration. would he and others with be better served to at least for now accept the results and give the president-elect a c ....
