Hotels, theatres, gyms hit by uncertainty seek relief from govt.

Owners say that any extension in restrictions will spell doom for business
Many parts of Bengaluru, which would have otherwise been packed, were noticeably empty on Wednesday, a day after the government introduced restrictions and shut down theatres, hotels, malls, and gyms for two weeks.
People whose livelihoods are dependent on these sectors fear that the “semi-lockdown” will be extended beyond the two weeks. Any such extension will “ruin our business irrevocably”, said proprietors who are still to recover from last year’s lockdown.
Chandrashekhar Hebbar, president, Karnataka Regional Hotels’ and Restaurants’ Association, argued that opening only for takeaways was not viable. Most hotels will shut shop, he predicted. “Already hit from the restrictions last year, nearly 3,000 hotels wound up business. This year too, we may see a repeat of the situation,” he said. ....

The industry has been urging the government to consider those employed in the hotel industry as frontline workers
The government’s decision to impose night curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in the light of a spike in COVID-19 cases has not gone down well with the hotel industry, especially as restaurants, pubs, and other eateries are operating at 50% occupancy. ....

Hoteliers and gym owners have resigned themselves to the inevitable fallout of the government’s restrictions in the wake of the second wave of COVID-19. A complete closure of gyms and 50% occupancy in hotels will hit businesses hard, and both industries have demanded a relief package from the State government. Owners argued that they are one of the most severely hit sectors but are yet to get any relief from the government.
Chandrashekhar Hebbar, president, Karnataka Regional Hotels and Restaurants Association, while acknowledging the inevitability of restrictions on occupancy, said that unless the government provided a relief package this time around, the sector would find it difficult to cope. “We are not asking for cash payouts. We demand exemption of deposit charges by electricity supply companies and property tax for last year and this year for hoteliers. The Central government must relax certain norms and provide some cash with ....
