Election losses for Labour prompts further rightward shift by Starmer
The opposition Labour Party suffered massive losses in the “Super Thursday” elections throughout the UK.
Elections were held for the devolved parliaments in Scotland and Wales, and in 143 English councils, where more than 5,000 seats were contested including 35 metropolitan and 59 district councils. Mayoral elections were contested in major cities and regions including London and Greater Manchester.
Elections for the Hartlepool’s parliamentary seat saw Labour lose for the first time in over 60 years, with a 16 percent swing to the Conservatives. This was only the second ever by-election victory by a ruling party, taking a seat from an opposition party, since the Second World War.

Shadow Chancellor Anneliese Dodds has been ditched by Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer and replaced in the role by Rachel Reeves (pictured left).
The move comes as part of a wider reshuffle following Labour’s disastrous showing in the local elections last week.
Reeves, a former Bank of England economist, tweeted:
Honoured to accept the role of Shadow Chancellor.
Our economic recovery must be fair. We must transform lives & back businesses in every part of our country.
Together we can create the secure jobs & strong infrastructure we need.

Meanwhile, Shadow Minister for Housing Thangam Debbonaire moves on from the role after 13 months to become Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.

SIR Keir Starmer is set to launch a cabinet reshuffle today as Labour MPs brand him a coward for firing Angela Rayner.
As the party is embroiled in a civil war, King of the North Andy Burnham slammed the news Ms Rayner had been sacked as chairman of the party.

The newly re-elected mayor of Greater Manchester said I can t support this , as the campaigns co-ordinator was unceremoniously dismissed from office.
And Liverpool MP Kim Johnson said the sacking was an appalling act of cowardice .

David Cameron contacted the Bank of England at least six times to lobby on behalf of his employer Lex Greensill, new documents show.
Emails released under Freedom of Information rules show the Tory ex-Prime Minister repeatedly attempted to persuade the Bank to extend support to Greensill Capital, where he worked as a paid adviser.
It comes as the Treasury s top official revealed that the doomed firm had persistently lobbied to join the Government s Covid support schemes.
Sir Tom Scholar, the Treasury permanent secretary, told the Public Accounts Committee that Mr Cameron had rung him personally sent some text messages to demand Covid help.
