Parliamentary secretary's statement on Asian Heritage Month

VICTORIA – Rachna Singh, Parliamentary Secretary for Anti-Racism Initiatives, has issued the following statement in honour of Asian Heritage Month:
“We recognize this Asian Heritage Month is unlike any we have celebrated in the past. From the early days of this COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Canadians have been targeted by increased hate and discrimination.
“But make no mistake. The discrimination of people of Asian descent runs deep in this province and country – from the head tax to the internment of people of Japanese descent to the violence we are seeing now. This recent increase in incidents is intrinsically tied to a long history of racism. Asian communities in this province have been fighting for equity and justice for over 150 years. ....

Why: Victoria Baroque will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a concert, Grand Concerti Grossi, streamed live Tuesday night from the Church of St. John the Divine. The celebration will include a tribute to local harpsichordist Michael Jarvis, a Victoria Baroque favourite who died suddenly on Christmas Day at the age of 62. Grand Concerti Grossi will showcase 11 musicians’ exceptional quality, with a program featuring music by Baroque masters Vivaldi, Telemann and Evaristo Dall’Abaco. The concert is free to view, but donations will be accepted.

The sadness that came with various provincial health orders was palpable in the creative community as scores of live performances were cancelled at the stroke of a pen. But there were still many joyful moments in the performing arts during the past 12 months.

Former National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Chan Hon Goh mounts a comeback in The Nutcracker

Chan Hon Goh has accomplished a great deal in her life. A former principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada, she performed on-stage for more than 20 years before hanging up her slippers in 2009.
Since then, as the director of the Goh Ballet Academy and Youth Company Canada, she has won numerous honours, including being admitted into the Order of Canada, winning a YWCA Women of Distinction Award, and capturing an award as the best teacher at the World Ballet Competition.
Goh Ballet has been based in Vancouver since 1978. And it’s best known to Vancouverites for staging ....
