Will the perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal smell the success? SECTIONS Share Synopsis Ajmal, the perfume baron who says he is no longer interested in business, has assumed centrestage in Assam elections. The man from Hojai in Assam wears many hats founder of AIUDF, three-time MP and Islamic spiritual healer but outside these spheres, he is a perfume mogul. Who is Badruddin?” Fifteen years ago, former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi pointedly asked that question and kept asking it. The year was 2006. A newly formed All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) mounted a massive election campaign, with its founder Maulana Badruddin Ajmal pumping in cash in minority-dominated pockets of lower and middle Assam. Gogoi was alerted by his party leaders that it was an attack on their very citadel. In his characteristically candid style, the late Congressman retorted “Who is Badruddin?” a question he repeated in public forums. ....
Badruddin Ajmal GUWAHATI: Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday accused perfume baron, Badruddin Ajmal, of taking money from foreign institutions on the pretext of social service and creating an environment that posed a threat to Assamese culture. Calling himself an ‘extremist’, Sarma said he is determined to protect the Indian and Assamese culture from invasion by illegal migrants patronised by the “institution in AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.” “This is probably the most dangerous phase of Assam politics. Ajmal, the enemy of Assam, is bringing money from fundamentalist organisations. In the name of social service, he is creating a network, which is not conducive to Assamese culture,” the minister claimed. ....
GUWAHATI: A day after Amit Shah said only the BJP can keep Assam free of infiltrators, the All India United Democratic Front took a dig at the saffron party, asking why it has brought the Citizenship Amendment Act that grants citizenship to “foreigners”. AIUDF general secretary Champak Kalita, in a statement, said, “Only BJP can save Assam! What a laughable comment! The person and the party which introduced the contentious citizenship law in the parliament which rolls out the red carpet to welcome Bangladesh Hindus, one of the communities which will benefit from the CAA, now saying it will save from illegal foreigners. Isn t it double standard?” ....
GUWAHATI: The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) poll results on Saturday show that the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) might have lost its touch with the minority voters in the Bodo heartland as it failed to open its account this time. In 2015, AIUDF had won four seats. Ajmal’s party, which has Muslim minorities as its vote bank, failed to woo the votes of its own people as many see minority people turning towards the Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF, which is set to be the single-largest party, for “security reasons”. AIUDF general secretary Champak Kalita said AIUDF has shown respect to the mandate and the party will introspect what went wrong. “Prima facie it appears that the minority people have chosen BPF for the social and political security for which AIUDF also works,” added Kalita. He said AIUDF is happy that BJP is not up to the mark despite aggressive campaigns from the saffron party. ....
