2 canoeists rescued on Allagash Wilderness Waterway May 24, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail MILLINOCKET, Maine (AP) A ranger and two game wardens rescued a pair of West Virginia residents who spent 90 minutes in the cold water after their canoe capsized in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, officials said Monday. Joshua Tinnel, age 43, and Shawna Robinson, age 51, both of Nitro, West Virginia, were canoeing on Chamberlain Lake when their canoe capsized during strong winds Sunday morning about 60 miles north of Millinocket, officials said. “Hypothermia sets in quickly with water temperatures this cold, and their life jackets saved them,” said Maine Warden Service Lt. Tom Ward. They activated the SOS feature on their global positioning system beacon, which transmitted their location to the Maine Warden Service. ....

Applications open for visiting artist program Allagash Wilderness Waterway Submitted photo The Allagash Wilderness Waterway 2021 Visiting Artist Program, which brings artists to the remote wilderness of Maine for two-weeks of solitude, is now open for applications. The program provides artists with the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature to interpret and share their experiences through their art. For summer 2021, one chosen artist and a guest will receive complimentary lodging at the AWW Lock Dam Camp for two weeks during August and orientation by AWW rangers. The application deadline is Sunday, Feb. 28, and notification will be made by March 20. Lock Dam Camp is a one-room cabin on the northern end of Chamberlain Lake, one of the largest and deepest lakes in the North Maine Woods.
