Flood advisory


(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency) — Based on information received from the National Weather Service on Guam, an urban and small stream flood advisory is in effect for Saipan, Tinian and Rota, Wednesday, until 2:45 p.m.
At 11:46 a.m. Wednesday, satellite estimates indicated heavy rain in the advisory area. This will cause urban and small stream flooding. Some locations that will experience flooding include Garapan,  Dandan,  China  Town,  Tanapag,  As  Mahetog,  Koblerville,  Chalan Kanoa, San Antonio, San Roque, Kagman, Gualo Rai, Afetnas, Chalan Piao, Sinapalo on Rota and  San  Jose on Tinian.
Additional  rainfall  amounts  of  1  to  3  inches  are  expected  over  the   area.  This additional rain will result in minor flooding. ....

OPINION | Better road infrastructure improves the quality of life of our community


DURING the onset of the pandemic, we were fortunate to live on islands with uncrowded and open public spaces. On Saipan, we turned to the Beach Road Pathway, walking and jogging when indoor exercise facilities were closed. Many hopped on their bikes and navigated the road in Marpi for sightseeing and exercise. Some also biked to work to avoid carpooling. These public spaces gave us a sense of normalcy in the midst of the pandemic — something that crowded cities could only wish for in these challenging times.
The Governor’s Council of Economic Advisers or GCEA believes managing these public places, specifically our road infrastructure, will play a critical role in our efforts to keep our islands safe and revive the pandemic-battered economy. The roads will be better lit, and people can safely walk on the sidewalks at any time of the day, boosting Saipan’s walkability score and moving us toward a more sustainable future. CNMI will start $40.5M in road improvements

Road construction will commence this year to improve the transportation needs of the Northern Marianas.
The administration of Gov. Ralph Torres and Lt. Gov. Arnold Palacios has committed to repairing and enhancing major highways and thoroughfares on Saipan, according to a news release.
Led by Palacios, the Highway Task Force streamlined plans and funding to rebuild roads damaged through disasters, heavy equipment, erosion and stormwater runoff.
The need to align projects and funding sources was a critical component, ensuring that all federal partners understand the needs of the CNMI as much as those who are doing the “boots on the ground” work, the release stated. ....
