Pittsfield Councilors Say Superintendent Selection Sets City Back

Deputy Superintendent Joseph Curtis, who has been leading the 5,000-student district since last fall, was chosen out four finalists on Wednesday with a majority vote of 4-3.   This prompted committee member Dennis Powell to publicly resign from the body, citing a lack of voice among his colleagues and a flawed process.   It s unfortunate, and I really felt that at the beginning of this whole process, I could have wrote this ending, that s the way this whole process was run, Powell said to the committee on Wednesday before signing off the Zoom meeting.   On Thursday, Ward 5 Councilor Patrick Kavey addressed those who voted for Curtis: Mayor Linda Tyer, Daniel Elias, William Cameron, and Chairwoman Katherine Yon, in a Facebook post stating that they had failed the district with their selection.

The council ordained a zoning amendment for a Downtown Creative District in a 9-1 vote with Ward 1 Councilor Helen Moon opposed and Ward 6 Councilor Dina Guiel Lampiasi absent. Interim Superintendent Joseph Curtis Offered Pittsfield Public School Superintendent Position

Curtis was selected from four candidates on a 4-3 vote with Mayor Linda Tyer, Daniel Elias, William Cameron and Chairwoman Katherine Yon voting in his favor.   Member Dennis Powell, the only supporter of Portia Bonner, a Connecticut administrator, publicly resigned from the committee in protest after the vote.   It s unfortunate, and I really felt that at the beginning of this whole process, I could have wrote this ending, that s the way this whole process was run, Powell said before signing out of the Zoom meeting. So really, unfortunately, I just have to take the position and I m just going to resign from this body, input my energy for the community somewhere where I think I will have a voice.
