Adesina reminded an audience of Africa’s knack for unique home-grown innovation as he was honored by one of the continent’s oldest and most respected universities last Friday. Adesina joined graduates at a ceremony in Uganda, where he received an honorary doctorate from Makerere University. He recounted how a phone call from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni some 20 years earlier had led to one of the country’s most famous inventions. Back then, Adesina was associate director at the Rockefeller Foundation. Museveni had sought his advice to deal with the country’s banana glut. That conversation eventually led to a relationship with Makerere University’s food technology department, which developed a method to transform bananas into shelf-stable flour that could be used to prepare the local sta ....
Council Members commended FAO’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic 1 May 2021, Rome - The 166 th Session of the FAO Council, the third session held entirely virtually, ended today with its Members praising the Organization s main actions and initiatives to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and to foster sustainable development, as well as supporting the proposed documents to guide the Organization s work over the next years. The Council is the executive organ of the FAO Conference. It has 49 Members and meets between Conference sessions which bring all 194 FAO Members together every two years. The Council exercises functions dealing with the world food and agricultural situation and related matters, current and prospective activities of the Organization, including the Programme of Work and Budget, administrative matters, the financial management of the Organization, and constitutional questions. ....

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has called on Parliament to discontinue the passage of the Public Universities Bill. According to a press release issued by (GAUA), the Association bemoaned events surrounding the bill. “The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) is very disturbed about the recent rhetorics and public discourse on the Public Universities Bill from the Minister of Education and some members of Parliament and the subsequent media reportage on the issue. GAUA has been part of the stakeholders who submitted memoranda and eventually met the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education on the Bill. However, if the recent rhetorics and the document we have sighted as having been laid before Parliament for consideration is anything to go by, then it will not be wrong on our part to conclude that the position of GAUA on the draft Bill has not been considered as any useful input. ....
15 December 2020 - Wits University Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Adam Habib, will leave Wits University at the end of December 2020. “It has been an honour and a pleasure to serve at the helm of this great institution for the past eight years.
