Google, Facebook to face stricter obligations under bill

Google and Facebook would face stricter rules of accountability under a digital communications bill to be considered by the legislature, National Communications Commission (NCC) Chairman Chen Yaw-shyang (陳耀祥) said yesterday.
The commission on Wednesday unveiled the framework of the bill at a news conference in Taipei, saying that it was designed to regulate online platforms, as well as Internet service providers and caching service providers.
The bill would divide the operators of digital platforms into “online platform service providers” and “designated online platform service providers,” with the latter representing companies with a stronger market influence, which would have to meet more obligations, ....

Taiwan offers low-cost 5G: NCC chair

People in Taiwan can access 5G services at relatively cheap rates compared with other advanced countries, National Communications Commission (NCC) Chairman Chen Yaw-shyang (陳耀祥) yesterday told lawmakers at a meeting of the legislature’s Transportation Committee.
Although Chen was there to brief lawmakers about the commission’s budget plan for the next fiscal year, they asked him mostly about his meeting with telecom executives on Thursday last week, where he was expected to convey legislators’ expectations that telecoms would boost the 5G penetration rate nationwide by lowering monthly fees.

NCC head to meet with telecoms to discuss 5G

National Communications Commission (NCC) Chairman Chen Yaw-shyang (陳耀祥) on Thursday said he would meet with telecom executives to discuss ways to increase the penetration rate of 5G services.
The nation’s five largest telecoms launched 5G services in June last year.
The commission later estimated that the 5G coverage rate would not reach 85 percent until 2025.
However, the telecoms’ average coverage was 78 percent in August, with one provider last month reaching the 85 percent target, NCC data showed.
The Executive Yuan’s Forward-Looking Infrastructure Development Program has contributed to the funding of 5G expansions.
