NEW YORK – A year on from the spate of antisemitic incidents that rocked the New York area, including deadly attacks in Jersey City and Monsey, Jewish leaders remain fearful for the future despite the high-profile show of solidarity for the community that initially followed.
“I’m saddened that I think a lot of the progress that was made because of these horrible incidents has eroded one year later,” says Evan Bernstein, CEO of Community Security Service, which helps empower Jewish communities to act for their own safety.
“I think antisemitism is still as relevant as it was before, and I’m concerned now that people just don’t think about it and they’re not looking at the antisemitism that’s still taking place,” adds Bernstein, who previously spent 20 years working at the Anti-Defamation League, including seven years as the organization’s regional director for New York and New Jersey. ....

NEW YORK (JTA) – When 25,000 Jews marched across the Brooklyn Bridge on Jan. 5, Evan Bernstein felt something he hadn’t experienced in weeks: optimism.
Not even a month earlier, he had prayed with the small Orthodox community in Jersey City, New Jersey, next to the spot where shooters had just killed three people at a kosher supermarket after gunning down a police officer.
Eighteen days later, when a man with a machete entered a rabbi’s home in Monsey, New York, and stabbed five people, Bernstein –  then the New York-New Jersey regional director of the Anti-Defamation League – drove up immediately. After staying up half the night checking in on the community and talking to law enforcement and reporters, he slept in his car. Before and after the attacks, he’d been making trips to Brooklyn to respond to a string of ....

‘A miracle happened here’: Table smashed while stopping Monsey synagogue attack suspect finds new life as Chanukah menorah stand
MONSEY, N.Y. (WCBS) We all remember last year’s deadly Chanukah attack at the home of a Rockland County rabbi.
The congregation vowed to overcome the terror of that night. This year, they celebrate the holiday with a unique memento that symbolizes resilience, and light shining through the darkness.
As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reports, it’s a one-of-a-kind stand for a Chanukah menorah, fashioned from pieces of a broken table. The shattered marble and cracked wood are visible.
It’s quite a story how it found a place of prominence at Congregation Netzach Yisroel in Rockland County. ....
