In surprise announcement, DeSantis replaces the heads of two major state agencies

TALLAHASSEE â Gov. Ron DeSantisâ administration announced Friday that it is shaking up the leadership in agencies on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Top staffers responsible for fighting the virus, combating the negative social consequences of the pandemic and getting unemployment claims processed are all leaving their current roles.
â¢ After two years at the helm of the Department of Children and Families, Chad Poppell is resigning effective Feb. 19, according to a letter he sent to DeSantis.
â¢ Shevaun Harris, who is serving as acting secretary for the Agency for Health Care Administration since October, was tapped as Poppellâs replacement. ....

DeSantis administration shakeup: New leaders named for DCF and AHCA

TALLAHASSEE Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration underwent a major shake-up on Friday, with an announcement of the resignation of the secretary of the Department of Children and Families and the shuffling of two other top officials to lead DCF and the Agency for Health Care Administration.
The moves could be a prelude to other changes shortly after the midpoint of DeSantis’ four-year gubernatorial term.
The DeSantis administration announced that DCF Secretary Chad Poppell resigned, effective Feb. 19, and that Shevaun Harris will replace him at the agency in charge of Florida’s oft-beleaguered child welfare system.
Harris has been serving as interim secretary at the Agency for Health Care Administration, where she has held a series of posts since 2005. ....

Florida lawmakers are again looking at the Department of Children and Families in the wake of a USA Today investigation that found the agency had a low verification rate for claims of sex abuse by foster parents. The agency s secretary says his recent comments before a Senate panel may have been misinterpreted.
During a Senate hearing earlier this month, DCF Secretary Chad Poppell said some children make false claims, as he explained the department s processes for investigations. The statement angered Senate Children and Families Committee Chairwoman Lauren Book, a sex abuse survivor. ....

For nearly two decades the Florida Department of Children and Families has been plagued by high-profile failures that resulted in children being severely harmed or killed. It’s also struggled with high employee turnover and ongoing criticism. This year, the results of a USA Today project are prompting new legislation aimed at how the agency deals with foster parents. WFSU recently spoke with DCF Secretary Chad Poppell about how the agency is trying to move forward.
Poppell has worked in several state agencies, landing at DCF in 2019 when he was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Poppell says he came to the agency aware of its history, but wanted to look at it with “fresh eyes.” ....
