SKAO Appoints Its Telescope Directors In Australia And South Africa

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is pleased to announce the appointment of two widely respected figures in the field as its telescope directors in Australia and South Africa. These positions are the most senior SKAO operations representatives in the telescope host countries.
Dr Sarah Pearce, currently Acting Chief Scientist of Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, will be the director of the SKAO’s low-frequency telescope in Australia. Sarah said: “This is a unique and exciting opportunity to establish the SKA Observatory team in Australia and help deliver the world’s next generation radio telescopes. I’m honoured to continue my work on the SKA Project in this new role, and I look forward to building a long-lasting partnership between the SKA Observatory and CSIRO.” ....

Planet named after award-winning CSIRO scientist
Dr Alex Held, Director of the CSIRO Centre for Earth Observation, has been recognised for his pioneering contributions to Earth observation and space research with the 2020 Harrie Massey Award.
The award was presented in Sydney by the Committee of Space Research (COSPAR) and includes having a minor planet named in their honour – in this case, the minor planet 8479, that will now be known as Held. Discovered in 1987, the planet is 5km in diameter and is situated in the Main Asteroid Belt.
Acting CSIRO Chief Scientist Dr Sarah Pearce congratulated Dr Held on the international recognition and his 30-year contribution to CSIRO. ....
