Kansas Soil Health Alliance uses tech to teach good farm habits

ESBON From No-Till on The Plains to the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition, farmers and ranchers in Kansas are practicing and learning about soil health. The newly formed Kansas Soil Health Alliance is a non-profit organization that will serve as a digital library and education repository.
We re kind of a database/library, said board member Cade Rensink, a fifth-generation rancher in Minneapolis.
Rensink, who also works for K-State Research & Extension as the director of the Central Kansas District in Saline and Ottawa counties, said board members of the newly formed non-profit will also offer knowledge and mentoring.
Soil health is important for a number of reasons, Rensink said. Society, in general, is paying more attention to how food is grown. ....

MKC donates to Central Kansas District 4-H leadership development

MOUNDRIDGE To further enhance the leadership development programs of the Central Kansas District, Mid Kansas Cooperative will donate $3,500 to the Saline and Ottawa County 4-H Leadership Development fund.
A large portion of MKC’s donations go toward programs that promote ag education and leadership development, alleviate hunger in its communities and improve or enhance community safety. MKC believes the leadership programs available through 4-H are outstanding and that they help develop the leadership skills of today’s youths.
“This is a great opportunity for us to assist local 4-H organizations that play such a positive role in the lives of so many young people within our trade territory,” said Brad Stedman, president and CEO of MKC. “It is exciting to think those same youth will be the future leaders of our communities.” ....

Members of area 4-H clubs got a dramatic demonstration this week of the power of the ocean, from volume and pressure alone.
Marine geologist Aida Farough showed more than 30 participants in an online district-wide meeting about marine geology the results of one of her experiments. She took a six-inch foam coffee cup down about 12,000 feet to the bottom of the ocean.
She showed the participants a picture of the cup after it returned, compressed to only about 2 inches high.
Members of the Central Kansas District and Smoky View 4-H Club attended the meeting about marine geology on January 14. ....
