Connecticut business owner, poker player, sentenced to prison for tax evasion


Leonard C. Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Guy Smith of Shelton, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford to 14 months of imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release, for tax evasion.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Smith owns and operates Centerline Interiors LLC, a business that specializes in commercial interior construction. Smith is also a professional poker player and has participated in poker tournaments at casinos in Connecticut and other locations around the U.S. and The Bahamas. Smith withdrew funds from both his business and personal bank accounts for his gambling business. ....

A Connecticut poker player will be sitting on the sidelines for awhile after being sentenced to 14 months in prison in a tax-invasion case involving over $2 million in unreported income, nearly half of which came from his part-time professional poker career.

A professional poker player who has participated in tournaments at casinos in Connecticut and beyond was sentenced Friday to 14 months in prison for tax evasion, according to the office of the U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Guy Smith, 63, of Shelton also was sentenced to two years of supervised release during the hearing in Hartford. He pleaded guilty in December.
The U.S. attorney s office said Smith failed to report more than $1 million in gambling winnings and approximately $1.1 million in income to his business, Centerline Interiors, a contractor specializing in commercial interior work. He owed the government a total of $821,415 from 2012 through 2016. ....
