Center Point Council addresses residents' concerns; High-end package store proposed

CENTER POINT – On Thursday, May 6, the Center Point City Council met for a regular meeting at City Hall. The feasibility study for a new police department and changes to one travel policy were discussed.
During public comment, Center Point Fire Captain Busby reminded the public that the city’s fire district teaches CPR classes every third Thursday at 5 p.m. and that their smoke detector program is available to any residents in the area. Busby also encourages healthcare workers such as nurses, paramedics to check out the EMS challenge every Wednesday of each month.
Local business Owner Jermaine Williams said he hopes to open a package store in Center Point because his friends and family realized that there was not a package store in the city. ....

City of Center Point hosts tree-planting ceremonies in honor of teacher Connie Everett

CENTER POINT April 22, 2021, was not just Earth Day but a special day that faculty and students in Center Point will remember forever.
There were two tree planting ceremonies held at Erwin Middle School and Center Point High School in honor of Mrs. Connie Everett, who worked at the schools.
Everett passed away on March 12, 2021, after losing the battle to throat and lung cancer.
One of Everett’s former students, Octavious Pierce, took things into his own hands after he found out about her death. He went to City Hall and spoke with Mayor Bobby Scott. Together, they organized a tree-planting ceremony and dedication service in Everett’s honor. ....

NWS upgrades tornado to EF-3 with winds up to 150 mph

CENTER POINT The National Weather Service in Birmingham upgraded the tornado that hit the Fultondale area to an EF-3. Damage was reported primarily north of Walker Chapel Road NW to U.S. Highway 31 and to New Castle Road. Crews said winds were at least 150 mph on the evening of Monday, Jan. 25, 2021.
“Keep in mind that intensity & width varied along its path,” the NWS posted on Facebook. “The EF-3 damage was focused near Lykes Blvd. to New Castle Rd.”
The tornado had a path length of 9.5 miles and a max width of 500 yards, according to the NWS. ....

1 dead, around 30 injured after apparent tornado in Jefferson County

CENTER POINT The National Weather Service in Birmingham confirmed one person was killed in an apparent tornado late Monday, Jan. 25, 2021. Around 30 people were injured. Major structural damage was reported in Fultondale and Center Point and other damage was seen in Clay.
In Fultondale, a 14-year-old boy was killed in the area of New Castle Road. The child was a student at Fultondale High School. Authorities said the child was with his father in the basement of their home when a tree fell on the house. The father was also hurt. The Hampton Inn and Hurst Towing and Recovery also had major damage. ....
