Even Though Doses Are Low, Older People In Kansas City Are Getting Help Finding Vaccinations

After Missouri opened vaccine eligibility to seniors and high-risk individuals over two weeks ago, local organizations have battled various obstacles trying to distribute the doses where they’re needed most.
James Watts was eager to travel again, to see his children and grandchildren.
This week, that dream inched a bit closer to reality when the 71-year-old from Kansas City got his first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccination at the Linwood YMCA.
“I want to be able to see (family), with some protection,” Watts said. “For me to be mobile was the number one reason.” ....

Demand For 'Meals On Wheels' Jumps Tenfold As Older Kansas Citians Face Hunger And Isolation

Nora Karnes,80, had never requested a Meals on Wheels delivery before the pandemic. But homebound since March, she needs the surplus supplies. KC Shepherd s Center s weekly demand for deliveries has jumped from 50 to 400 since the pandemic began.
Older Kansas Citians might get the vaccine sooner because they are at greater risk of dying from COVID-19, but the pandemic is casting a light on the long-standing health challenges they already face.
When Steve Rinne, 64, and Barb Meuth, 68, learned that KC Shepherd s Center had been flooded with increased demand for Meals on Wheels deliveries, they volunteered to take a route.
“It makes me feel good to do this,” Rinne said as he loaded another box of fruit cups, peanut butter, toilet paper and other nonperishables into the back of his royal blue Prius. “Someday someone might need to help me like this.” ....
