The Irish parliament has proposed legislation that would establish a new media commission. The proposed body would see staff transferred from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and establish an Online Safety Commissioner tasked with the regulation of social media platforms with a focus on the online abuse of female politicians and journalists. “We take note of the targeting of journalists and politicians and women journalists and politicians in particular,” said the BAI’s deputy chief executive, Celine Craig. “This draft law envisages that the era of self-regulation is over and there will be a requirement for platforms to be accountable to the independent regulator,” she added. ....
