PHNOM PENH, April 9 (Xinhua) Cambodia has recorded 576 new local cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest-ever since the virus hit the kingdom in January last year, a Ministry of Health (MoH) statement said on Friday.
The figure surpassed the previous highest daily record of 179 cases on March 26.
Of the new cases, 544 were found in capital Phnom Penh, 16 in Svay Rieng province, 12 in Preah Sihanouk province, two in Siem Reap province and one each in Kandal and Kampong Cham provinces, the statement said.
The MoH s secretary of state and spokeswoman Or Vandine on Friday called on the people to stay at home during the upcoming Khmer New Year holiday from April 14-16 in order to help curb the virus spread. ....

The Ministry of Health on April 8 issued an announcement on Covid-19 vaccination for foreigners residing and working in Cambodia, directing the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and local authorities to register them.
Health minister Mam Bun Heng, who is also head of the inter-ministerial committee tasked with combatting Covid-19, said the vaccination is on a voluntary basis.
He noted that the vaccination is for foreign nationals who are not employees of UN bodies, international organisations, international finance institutions, embassies, or local NGOs under the coordination and facilitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. ....

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia reported a daily record 576 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, in a spike in infections since an outbreak detected seven weeks ago that has seen a seven-fold increase in its overall case tally.
Cambodia until recently had one of the world s smallest coronavirus case totals but the outbreak first detected in late February has led to its first 24 COVID-19 deaths and a climb in infections to 3,604.

PHNOM PENH, April 9 (Reuters) - Cambodia reported a daily record 576 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, in a spike in infections since an outbreak detected seven weeks ago that has seen a seven-fold increase in its overall case tally.
Cambodia until recently had one of the world’s smallest coronavirus case totals but the outbreak first detected in late February has led to its first 24 COVID-19 deaths and a climb in infections to 3,604.
“COVID-19 continues to threaten us. Please continue to be vigilant by practicing hygiene, keep social distancing, do not leave your house unnecessarily,” Cambodia’s Communicable Disease Control Department said in a statement posted on Facebook on Friday. ....

Linath Lim’s life was shaped by starvation.
She was not yet 13 when the Khmer Rouge seized power in Cambodia and ripped her family apart. The totalitarian regime sent her and four siblings to work camps, where they planted rice and dug irrigation canals from sunrise to sunset each surviving on two ladles of rice gruel a day. One disappeared, never to be found.
Just a few months before the Khmer Rouge fell in January 1979, Lim’s father starved to death, among the nearly one-quarter of Cambodians who perished from execution, forced labor, starvation or disease in less than four years. ....
