Goodyear Blimp to stop in Carlsbad

Keep your eyes up in the sky on May 24. That’s the day we’ve been informed that the Goodyear Blimp plans a stop at Cavern City Air Terminal. The blimp expects to arrive at around 5 p.m. on the 24th, land for the night and then take off the following morning. We don’t have a departure time yet, but you’ll certainly be able to get a good view of the blimp from outside of the airport fence.  Goodyear’s U.S. fleet consists of three helium-filled airships, each of them 246 feet long. The company launched its first blimp in 1925.

City Council extends air service agreement with Boutique Air

A recommendation from the City of Carlsbad to continue air service with a San Francisco area based airline was sent to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). Jan. 26 the Carlsbad City Council voted to extend the Essential Air Service (EAS) agreement with Boutique Air, which has had the contract since 2015. Late last year, Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway said DOT issued a request for proposals for EAS to operate commercial flights out of the Cavern City Air Terminal. Janway said EAS is a federal subsidy awarded to an airline offering flights to and from Carlsbad. The DOT asks for requests every few years.

Texas company gets three decade lease for hangars at Cavern City Air Terminal

A Texas company was awarded a long-term lease to construct a hangar and an access road at the Cavern City Air Terminal south of Carlsbad. Tuesday night, Carlsbad City Councilors approved a 30-year agreement with BMB Equipment Holding. The City of Carlsbad and the company signed a five-year agreement in 2014 for two hangars, according to a City Council document.
