2021 Code:Red heat relief effort launches May 10


Phoenix Rescue Mission is launching its ninth annual citywide Code:Red Summer Heat Relief campaign to ensure the Valley’s homeless population and at-risk individuals do not fall victim to the hot summer months ahead.
From May 10 to Aug. 31, the large-scale heat relief initiative and water drive is raising the level of need for this year’s campaign, due to the continuing risks of COVID-19. 
In addition to water and other heat relief items, the mission is asking the public to help support the campaign with monetary donations and nonperishable food drives. Monetary donations, which will be essential to meet the increased need during the difficult months ahead, will be matched up to $150,000 — made possible by a grant from several friends of the Phoenix Rescue Mission. ....

Glendale's homeless population suffers from COVID-19 and rising heat | News


Glendale leads in the number of homeless in the West Valley. People without shelters have to endure the new obstacles of COVID-19 and record-breaking heat levels, both of which are putting increased pressure on the city of Glendale and its outreach programs.
At a city council workshop Dec. 8, Glendale Community Services Director Jean Moreno was scheduled to review grant allocation recommendations. The city receives annual Department of Housing and Urban Development and Community Planning and Development grant allocations. 
According to the workshop agenda, “The programs financed with HUD CPD funds are intended to expand economic opportunities by investing in affordable housing, living wage, and quality of life programs designed to alleviate the causes and condition of poverty in communities as well as promote self-sufficiency and reduce homelessness.” ....
