we start the hour in tucson, arizona br about four bus loads of judges made the trip to say good-bye to a colleague. extremely tight security today at the funeral of federal judge john roll, one of the six killed in saturday s shooting rampage. among the mourners, arizona governor jan brewer, john mccain, dan quayle. we ve just heard senators mccain and kyle plan to propduce legislation to name a courthouse after john roll. the doctors say give ordinaries is opening her eyes more and more and able to carry out more complex movements both spontaneously and on command. another good sign, giffords husband said his wife s breathing tube may be removed today. the hospital says this morning s medical briefing will be the last barring a major change in any of the shooting victims conditions. representative giffords is still

years later in greenberg, kansas. many people consider this to be the modern-day version of the star-spangled banner, the flag that survived an onslaught. it s on tour across the united states leading up to the tenth rn saers saer of the 9/11 attacks. it s been to sporting events, eventually will become part of the collection of the national 9/11 memorial museum. which is being built at the world trade center. so where this is, it s being delivered to the st. elizabeth ann seton catholic church in tucson, arizona, which is where christina green will be buried. at least the funeral will take place for christina green in an hour and a half. christina green was born on september 11th, 2002001. let s listen in.
in tucson this past weekend. and our topic is gun laws around the world. richard, let s start with you. you ve got 60 seconds. and the gun laws and the point i want to make in this part of the program is really this. usually major events like tucson do lead to reform of the gun laws in different countries. let s start in australia, for example, where in port arthur in 1996, 35 people were killed in a gun massacre. now, in that case, it led to the federal ban in australia for self-loading weapons and pump-action shotguns. in the united kingdom in 1987, it whappened. in both bases, multiple deaths led the authorities to ban certain types of shotguns or certain types of self-loading rifles. it doesn t always work that way. take, for example, germany, which has some of the strictest
rules in the world. but still in the last decade, ali, they have had two scenes of mass murder. it makes you think, what is the relationship between laws and the events? in fact, richard, the rest of the world may be correct in thinking that the u.s. doesn t have those sort of reactions to gun freedom. gun freedom defenders in the united states go to great lengths in the aftermath of these events like in tucson to point out that these are the acts of the mentally deficient or of loners or of those with a grudge. richard, in fairness to the united states, there have been instances in which tragedy gave a boost to more restrictive laws in this country. the assault weapons ban of 1994 banned the manufacture and sale of certain semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines including the 33-bullet magazine used by the alleged arizona
