volatility appears to be the name of the game here. many experts believe that it could signal those changes could come as early as march. so let s bring in cnn economics and political commentator catherine rampel. we know this administration going back to last fall has been using whatever tools it can to tackle rising inflation and going after supply chain issues and congestions at u.s. ports. given what we are now, is a rate hike by the federal reserve the best tool and only remaining tool to really nip inflation in the bud. it is by definition the fed s job to deal with price stability. by congressional mandate among other things as well as obviously reputation, credibility. they have the tools available and the most powerful tools available to deal with this above trend inflation. so, yes, everyone is looking to the fed to see when are they going to start raising interest rates, when are they going to start shrinking their balance sheet. probably neither of those things ....

Prices as a result, but as you point out, we are coming out of, i hope, a global pandemic. and that has created a lot of growing pains for the economy right now because you have the supply chain problems around the world, not just in the united states, but in china, and elsewhere. we don t know how all of those will respond, of course, to omicron in the months ahead. you have demand way up. you have consumers shifting more of their basket of purchases away from services and towards goods, which is also driving up the cost of goods, of course. so bottom line, of course, the pandemic is still very much in control of the global economy and you re seeing that in these inflation numbers. so if the pandemic is still in control, catherine, i think the question for a lot of people is what do i look at? you wrote about it this week, when it comes to inflation, everybody is going to take they re going to take what they like, what works best for their narrative, whatever that may be, ....
